ALL ABOUT STEAMBOAT ROCK MOUNTAIN JERKY
What is Jerky?
Jerky is a nutrient-dense meat that has been made lightweight by drying. A pound of meat weighs about four ounces after being made into jerky. This means you are getting a pound of Elk, Buffalo or Beef when you order a package of Steamboat Rock Mountain Jerky. Because most of the moisture is removed, it is shelf stable and can be stored for moderate periods of time without refrigeration, making it the perfect food for backpackers and others who don’t have access to refrigeration. Because our Buffalo and Elk jerky contain no preservatives, and our Beef contains minimal preservatives, it is advised that for longer storage, your jerky should be kept cool and out of direct sun light. Steamboat Rock Mountain Jerky also freezes well, enabling you to take advantage of our specials without the fear of spoilage or loss of freshness or flavor.
Some interesting information not commonly known to Americans is that:
- "Biltong" is dried meat or game used in many African countries.
- Our word "jerky" comes from the Spanish word "charque."
- Jerky is a food known at least since ancient Egypt.
- Humans made jerky from animals that were too big to eat all at once, such as bear, buffalo, or whales.
- North American Indians mixed ground dried meat with dried fruit or suet to make "pemmican."
